Kim Kardashian and Justin Bieber Sign Holywood Pledge

Celebrities like Kim Kardashian and Justin Bieber may have the power to change the world.

Think about the impact Justin Bieber would have if he were to use Twitter to promote some ideological change, or to get people to help a community that has been devastated by some force of God. How much do you think soup kitchen volunteers would increase if Kim Kardashian were to announce she was spending her afternoons at a soup kitchen?

These celebs and others are hoping to cash in on their "social capital" to bring attention to charities by making the "Hollywood Pledge." This group pledge is inspired by the "Giving Pledge," which is headed by Bill Gates and Warren Buffett. In Giving Pledge, billionaires promise to give away most of their fortunes to charity. In the "Hollywood Pledge," stars promise to use their fame to promote others to give away their money, or volunteer their efforts toward worthy causes.

While celebs certainly have a ton of money, they generally aren't worth what most billionaires like Bill Gates are worth. By using social networking and media outlets to promote good, they could actually be affecting the cause more than if they were to give $100,000 to a charity. And this leaves them plenty of money to spend on $2 million engagement rings like Kim Kardashian's fiancé Kris Humphries did. By the way, that $2 million engagement ring is 2/3 of his annual salary, but who's counting?
