'Idol' sales: What's happening with Alaina?

Something interesting happened with the Walmart American Idol EPs last week. Scotty McCreery's five-track collection easily remained the top seller of the bunch, moving 17,000 units, a 23% increase, according to Nielsen SoundScan. But the other three shuffled around.

The first two weeks saw Lauren Alaina's EP the second most popular, as she was on the show, with James Durbin and Haley Reinhart switching positions but selling about the same amount. James and Haley continue like that this -- James is the better seller, but they're right next to each other on the charts, so they're essentially even. But now Lauren drops to fourth, behind everybody else.

The question is, is this a one-week anomaly or an indication of things to come? On the one hand, Lauren had a full set of her Idol performances selling on iTunes before James and Haley had anything, so she's still outselling them overall by a considerable margin. And less than a hundred units separates Lauren's and James' sales for the week. Still, one can't help but wonder if Lauren's ongoing mishaps -- blowing her voice out before the finale (a problem that hasn't fully resolved yet), then falling on the stage stairs and spraining her ankle -- isn't making her seem snakebit. And, to James' credit, he's making a big impression on audiences coming to the American Idols Live shows.

After hearing how hoarse Lauren was on the first night of the tour, one of the concertgoers I talked with afterwards said, "It's going to be a long summer for Lauren." And that was before the ankle sprain. Hopefully, as she gains confidence and experience on stage and in the studio, she'll be able to quickly turn things around.
